NOTRE-DAME-DE-GRÂCE COMMUNITY COUNCIL

TABLE DE QUARTIER NDG

Resource Guide - Health

The importance of health is parallel to none; it affects our bodies, minds and communities. Because health has a huge impact on well-being, efficiency and performance when we are healthy we are better families, employees and citizens. Canada’s universal healthcare policy reflects this idea and guarantees to meet each Canadian’s health needs. Unfortunately such a sizeable healthcare system can be complicated and confusing to navigate. The NDG community council has put together a directory of health services available in the borough as well as an FAQ section to answer some general question about the healthcare system here in Québec.

Included in this section is a rubrique concerning families with children 0 - 5 years. The sections contains information regarding pregnancy, birth, and post-partum resources.

Accessing medical care in Montreal

Due to a shortage of both family doctors and pediatricians in Montreal and Québec in general, health service users, adults and children, often turn to walk-in clinics for medical examinations. In order to get an appointment in a walk-in/drop-in clinic, service users can either call their chosen clinic first thing in the morning and ask for appointment availability or book an appointment online at Bonjour Santé. For a $15 service fee, Bonjour Santé will find appointments in your neighbourhood and surrounding areas, you must pay the $15 fee in order to book the appointment and be given the address.

In order to be placed on a waiting list for a family doctor or pediatrician, visit your local CSSS for a comprehensive list of health service providers in your area or follow this link for a list of Family Medicine Groups

Emergencies

If you are in a medical emergency dial 9 – 1 – 1 and ask for assistance, the operator will dispatch emergency personnel (police, firemen, ambulance) in minutes.

Hospital emergency rooms are the next emergency service location. Every hospital has one and the closest to NDG is the CHUM emergency room at 1001 Boulevard Décarie Montréal, QC H4A 3J1

Emergency room care for children will be provided at the Montreal Children’s Hospital also located in the CHUM also at 1001 Boulevard Décarie Montréal, QC H4A 3J1.

Health Information Services 8-1-1

If you have a health related question of any kind, dial 8 – 1 – 1. Nurses and health service professionals (social workers etc) answer this service and will attend to your questions, they will also advise you on further action such as seeking emergency help or going to a walk-in clinic.

Accessing healthcare without healthcare insurance

You will need a healthcare card for every service listed above, if you do not have a healthcare card you will be charged full price for all medical interventions. If you do not have the necessary paperwork to access subsidized healthcare you can receive care at Clinique Médecins du Monde.
